Calla Lilies Sculpture (Commissioned)

Commissioned Work
* This piece started with a fabulous chunk of ironwood I found in the a scrap bin at the local wood shop. Had no idea what I could use it for but I HAD to have it. Eventually became the base for this sculpture produced during a forging course I took at the local community college.
The wood was a gnarled, rounded section of trunk, 8” in diameter and 5” high, weighing over 5 pounds. It had a large natural hole down the center. I rounded the top, wire-wheeled the bark sides, and sanded and polished the whole section. The wood was finished with several coats of hand-rubbed tung oil and finished with wax.
Roots were forged and tapered from 3/8” steel rod, and inserted into the base. Stems were also forged and tapered from rod, and draw-filed. The lilies and leaves were plasma-cut by hand and forged from 14 gauge sheet steel and hammered to shape on the anvil. The flowers and leaves were air-blasted and brightened on a wire wheel, then welded to the stems. Stems were patinaed a copper color and set into the base.
* Accepted for display in the Salon de Refuses' Exhibit Student Gallery in the Pima Community College Annual juried Student Art Exhibition 2012.
