Price: $750
This long-bladed Viking-styled knife is hand-forged to a needle point in tempered 1095 steel. The heavy blade is wedge-ground with a long distal taper. The blade is hand-polished to a satin finish with a dark acid patina, in the traditional broken back configuration.
The simple oval guard is solid 1/8" copper with a heat-colored finish. The hand-fitting grip is the cannon bone of an elk, polished smooth and beautifully aged, with the 'knuckle' at the pommel. A copper ferrule is pinned with brass tacks to the bone grip.
The heavy vegetable-tanned leather sheath is wet-molded and hand-stitched, and dyed a deep green. The edge and chape are encased with heat-patinated copper fixtures, secured with solid copper rivets. Simple line-carved panels decorate the face. The sheath is suspended with copper-tipped and riveted leather loops, blade up in the traditional manner. The leather is finished with Neatsfoot oil.
The blade is 11” long, 1/4" thick, with a width varying from 1.125" at the guard to 1.5" wide at the break. The grip is 6" and the overall length of the knife is 17”.
* A Seax (also Hadseax, Sax, Seaxe, Scramaseax and Scramsax), was a type of Germanic single-edged knife and were carried for nearly 600 years. Seax seem to have been used primarily as a tool but may also have been a weapon in extreme situations. They occur in a size range from 3” to 30”. The larger ones (langseax) were probably weapons, the smaller ones (hadseax) tools, intermediate sized ones serving a dual purpose. The seax was worn in a horizontal sheath at the front of the belt. The Saxons may have derived their name from seax, the implement for which they were known.
