Presentation French and Indian Powderhorn
|
|
Sold: $375
A long, slender and elegantly carved presentation quality French and Indian powderhorn. The body is gently curved and twisted, made for right-hand carry. The filigreed base band was cut from the end of the horn, shaped, pierced, stippled and dyed, and then heat-applied. The spout plug was turned from the tip cutoff and dyed dark.
The spout was turned from a large and exceptionally straight elk tip; there is no core exposed. It is set on a tenon, glued and pinned with brass brads. The unusually solid horn tip allowed the front strap holder to be integrally carved into the horn, as well as a prominent wedding band below the spout. The raised panels are stippled to define the ovals. The horn has been gently patinaed.
The low domed base plug is turned oak with rope and groove patterns and a turned strap finial. The wood was stained, oiled and secured with brass pins.
The strap is woven jute sewn to leather straps.
The horn is 21" long and 2.75" in diameter at the base. » read customer feedback
