Hobby Horse for My Grandchild
Construction

Personal Project

Thirty-five years ago, my father made an oak rocking horse for my son, Soon, we will be passing that heirloom to my grandchild.

Inspired by that work, I wanted to make an heirloom toy for my grandchild as well. I decided on a hobby horse, and I wanted it to be based on the vintage toys from the Victorian era. I had recently found a collection of discarded large bamboo cuttings in a nearby alley and took some for vase projects. The head was carved from three laminated pieces of 2x10 structural fir, with the center laminate hollowed out for lightness. The wheel was fashioned from a walker wheel. And the purple paint-my grandchild's favorite (currently, two-years-olds are fickle) color. Much removal of wood that wasn't a horse commenced.

The bamboo was polished and lightly stained. The head was stained (I used a clear alchohol stain as oil stains "muddy" up softwood grains) and painted and then the entire piece received many layers of clear lacquer, sanded between each coat.

The horse is about 42” long.

Keywords: Hobby horse, wooden toy, wooden horse, toy horse, riding toy.
