Spontoon Gunstock War Club

Award Winner

Sold: $850

This one’s my favorite. An elegant presentation war club carved from Grade 6 curly maple. The curl runs the full length of the weapon The butt is carved and incised, with a scalloped back edge. The grip is hand-carved into a spiral column, and ends in a deadly heart-shaped point. Decorative brass tacks accent the carved panels.

A spontoon blade projects from the striking edge. The blade is spring steel, hand-forged (my first) and tempered, draw-filed and browned. The curled processes are left rough, and repeat the shape of the carved wood.

The stock is treated with Aqua Fortis, heated, and then finished with several coats of hand-rubbed tung oil to bring out the beauty of the curl.

The blade is 5.5" long by 1.75" wide. The club is 35" long, 6" wide by 1.25” thick at the butt.

* Accepted for display into the Pima Community College Annual juried Student Art Exhibition 2010.
