Ciboleros Hunting Set (Commissioned)

Commissioned Work

CIBOLEROS. The ciboleros were Mexican buffalo hunters who operated on the Llano Estacado for nearly two centuries. Their name was derived from the Spanish cíbolo, the common term for buffalo. Although they were often associated with the Comancheros, they were actually a distinct group whose primary objective was to hunt the shaggy bison for meat, hides, and sport. (Texas State Historical Association)

A client requested a set of Ciboleros knives, based on photos he sent me. It was later ascertained that these knives were a modern creation of Knifemaker Chuck Burrows.

The skinning and butcher knives are hand-forged of carbon spring steel. Each grip is made of mule deer leg-bones, wrapped in rawhide and waxed sinew. The sheath is heavy vegetable-tanned saddle leather, and hand-stitched. Horsehair scalp locks in brass cones hang from bone and glass beads.

The knife blades are 7” long and 1.25” wide and .25” thick. The grips are 5” long. The sheath is nearly 8’’ wide, with a 3’’ belt loop. » read customer feedback
