Flattened Priming Horn with Forged Spring Stopper for Sale

This is a unique powder horn, based on a piece I saw online from the George C. Neumann Collection, Valley Forge National Historical Park. It is a shining example of trying to build a better mouse trap. applying great skill, effort and ingenuity, but in the end, a bit of a failure. For all the work involved, a wood stopper would have been just as effective, then and now. I guess there were gadget geeks even then.

The thumb-acuated spring assembly is hand-forged from spring steel and painstakingly shaped and filed to fit the horn's body. The horn was flattened only slightly, as it was very flat naturally. The steel spring sections were bolted onto the body prior to closing off the base plug. The base is pine, and steel staples are applied for a strap attachment. The horn and metal parts were then patinaed for an antiqued look.
