Sold: $1500
“This elaborately decorated Northeast spike tomahawk (1750-1800) is very atypical of most. It is from the Splendid Heritage Warnock collection and undoubtedly was a presentation piece to a great Chieftain. It is 8" wide X 17" with many stamped markings. Maple haft is wrapped with silver bands.” — quote from Fur Trade Axes & Tomahawks web page (near bottom of page), describing the early tomahawk that inspired Larry Gotkin's Forged Fancy Spike Tomahawk.”
This beautiful piece was inspired by a unique early tomahawk from the Splended Heritage Warnock Collection (see original piece and description on the Splendid Heritage website).
The slender and elegant blade in this new piece is hand-forged from high-carbon steel, with a flared bevel-edged blade and an file-banded octagonal needle-pointed spike extending from the back of the octagonal teardrop eye. The blade is polished and deeply blued. The head shaft is banded in sterling silver.
Three pewter bands were cast into grooves and turned with the beautifully figured curly maple haft. The 7/8” diameter haft is round but flares into the teardrop eye. The wood is finished with aqua fortis and a rich dark stain, with several hand-rubbed layers of tung oil applied.
The tomahawk is mounted on a stand of natural weathered mesquite.
The tomahawk blade is 8.5” long and the overall length of the handle is 17.75”.
