Presentation Pipe Tomahawk with Pewter Mouthpiece for Sale

Sold: $750

A large and beautiful presentation-grade pipe tomahawk, hand-forged from a carbon steel ball-pein hammer. The whole head is forged to rough shape and then files are used to 'carve' the head into its final form. The layered goblet pipe bowl has an octagon base over a square base. The eye is heavy, with two wide fullers and a half medalion at the base of the blade. The lower edge of the blade has a deeply curved beard. The blade is fitted to the haft with a leather gasket, which was often used to make an airtight fit for smoking. The edge has been heat-treated and tempered.

The haft is premium curly maple, prepared with aqua fortis and stained a dark maple. The upper and lower portions of the grip are carved with hexagonal planes. The center of the grip has a pair of narrow cast-in pewter bands with a filed detail, with a scalloped pewter band beneath the head. The mouthpiece is also cast-in pewter (lead free) and has five incised lines around the circumferences.

The clean-out plug is turned from solid elk antler tips. The clean-out plug has a steel cleaning pick.

The presentation tomahawk measures 20", and the head is 7" long, with a 2.5” edge.
