Horse Head Gunstock War Club

SOLD: $525

This smaller-proportioned weapon is a presentation war club carved from beautifully figured Grade 6 curly maple. The dense curl runs the full length of the weapon. The wood is hand-carved, with a teardrop sectioned grip and a diamond-sectioned upper portion. A carved horse head creates the butt. The back strike edge is carved with a deep saw-toothed pattern. The club is decorated with cone-headed brass tacks, including crosses on the upper section.

The wood was treated with Aqua Fortis, heated, stained and then finished with several coats of hand-rubbed tung oil to bring out the beauty of the curl. A red horsehair “scalplock” drop is set into a brass cone with beads.

A sharpened forged steel knife blade projects from the striking edge. The handmade blade is draw-filed and patinaed for age.

The blade is 4.75" long by 1" wide, and 1/8’’ thick. The club is 29" long, 4.5" wide by 1” thick at the butt.
