Inlaid Bison Powderhorn for Sale

Sold: $400

This beautiful powderhorn was inspired by a photo of a powder horn “reputed to be owned” by William Clark, according to the Missouri History Museum website http://collections.mohistory.org/resource/83365.html.

The body is carved from American bison horn. The spout is long and round, while the center section has eight flat panels. Bone diamonds are inset into four panels, while two wood pegs decorate each panel. The upper portion is scraped smooth, with twenty wood pegs used to secure the base plug.

The base plug is pine, overlaid with alternating triangular panels of stained mahogany and bone. Each piece is pierced with a wood peg. The strap button is turned from bone and horn. The spout plug is turned from black cow horn.

This powder horn can be carried on either side.

The powderhorn is 11’’ long along the back curve, and the base is 3’’ in diameter.
