St. Louis Style Inlaid Bison Powder Horn

Sold: $435

This elaborately inlaid powder horn is in the St. Louis style of the Fur Trade Era. 

The body is carved from American bison horn. The spout is lathe-turned, and connected to the body with a turned elk antler collar/strap ring.The body is carved with eight flat inlaid panels for half its length, separated with a ring from the round body. The horn is scraped smooth and polished, with more than 150 inlaid wood pegs.

The base plug is pine, flat, and overlaid with an intricate pattern of alternating geometric panels of walnut and maple. Each piece is pierced with contrasting wood pegs. The strap finial is turned from elk antler and sits on an inlaid maple base, and has an inlaid wood piece in the end. The matching spout plug is turned from antler as well. There are over 200 pieces of wood, horn and antler used in the construction of this piece.

This powder horn can be carried on either side.

The powder horn is 10.5’’ long along the back curve, and the base is 3’’ in diameter. Total length is 12".
